Companies that make and sell clickers will have an uphill battle ahead of them. They work against the general idea that these devices are murderous tools that are best suited for secret killings, and that there are few other reasons why someone would need to have them other than "secret killer" or "take over Nakatomi Plaza". But after a few hours of shooting, we came away with the impression that suppressors are useful even for gun owners. And even if you are not a shooter at all, technology makes it possible to steal many reports from an interesting shot.
This technology is why we ended up with the line. Obviously this isn't "Gun Technica" and we don't usually look for advancements in firearms. However, being able to test the suppressors on 12 shots to immerse yourself in how they work was too much to say no to. So we went to Austin and met with Schauble, who brought a real smorgasbord of rifles and suppressors made in a silencer chamber to walk us through all of their functions.
If Jason Schauble's name sounds unfamiliar, that's because this isn't the first time Ars has met him. Schauble is the former CEO of TrackingPoint, a company that makes the most accurate (and most expensive) Linux-based guns. We last wrote about TrackingPoint in August, when we had hands-on time with the company pre-producing AR-15 carbines. We mentioned at the time that Schauble had left the company a few months ago, but he was getting nowhere.
It turns out that he skipped town to SilencerCo, working in the Utah company's Austin office as its CFO. His previous experience at Remington and Advanced Armament Corporation (not to mention his stint in the Marine Corps) seemed to prepare him for the job. By the time we assembled the Best of the West lineup — the same lineup we shot with TrackingPoint — Schauble already had a long table set up with guns and suppressors.

SilencerCo has proven to be a major player in a seemingly off-the-radar industry. Although it employs only 125 people, the company has a 40 percent share of the domestic market for compressors - making them the largest share of the more than 100,000 purchased each year in the United States. The company has been selling suppressors since 2009 and is growing the market. According to marketing materials provided by SilencerCo, sales of suppressors in the United States are growing at a rate of 20 percent annually. In 2014, SilencerCo expects to sell 40,000 products to customers ranging from private individuals to local law enforcement to the military.
SilencerCo was founded by Josh Waldron and Jonathan Shultz - a photographer and a sound engineer. The two were frustrated with both the process of buying suppressors and the lack of customer service from existing suppressor manufacturers (so they decided to start their own company trying to do something better). One of the first products that the couple designed and built was the Osprey shock - a non-circular "eccentric" shock that stands out in their line of standard cylindrical shocks. "Eccentric" here means that the hole through which the bullet passes does not pass through the center of the comfort. SilencerCo made this decision because most bottle suppressors stick to the rear of the gun's sights, blocking them and making effective aiming difficult. The Osprey design avoids this by placing most of its contents below the bore so that the gun's sights can be used.
